Description |
Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, causing misreading of mRNA. It is commonly used in molecular biology and cell culture to prevent bacterial contamination, often in combination with penicillin. Streptomycin is also used for the selection of streptomycin-resistant bacterial strains carrying the appropriate resistance gene. |
