Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, preventing peptide bond formation. It is commonly used in molecular biology for the selection of chloramphenicol-resistant bacterial strains, especially those carrying plasmids with the cat (chloramphenicol acetyltransferase) gene. |
